When it comes to mother nature there is no place like Kerala which is located down south of India.
Mountains, beaches, backwaters, forests, and its total greenery together constitute this little state more attractive and gaining attention throughout the world. There are a lot of places in this state which are pretty famous around the globe and contributing a major role in generating revenue in tourism. Apart from these famous touristy places Kerala got a lot of land which is hidden from outside, less crowded and makes your visit totally worth it.
Uluppuni is one of the less crowded and most attractive places in Kerala which is located in the Idukki district. This beautiful gem is located around 10 km from Vagamon which is a prominent tourist attraction in south Kerala.
The breathtaking view of infinite meadows in Uluppuni is a perfect gateway for wanderlusts. The breezy vibe and foggy climate surely make your soul shine. The place is highly suitable for those who love off-roading. Green grass and never-ending scenery of blissful Vagamon gives you a unique experience to mingle with mother nature. The untarred road in the middle of lush green meadows offers you a delightful walk experience. You can literally walk through the fog which makes your eyes blur, scary, and can’t see the entire area for a moment.
Uluppuni is a part of western ghats and its a gift for photography lovers. You can stuff your camera with lots of charming pictures to show off your friends. There are many movies in Malayalam which shot in these places before. Climax and intro scenes of the famous movie ‘Iyyobintepusthakam’ by Amal Neerad shot from this area.
Apart from Uluppuni’s viewpoint, there are many places nearby to visit if you are heading to this small hilltop. Vagamon lake, Illikkalkallu, pine trees, suicide viewpoint, Ilavizhapoonjira, and Thangalppara are the other major attraction which is very near to Uluppuni. One morning or evening on a day is far enough to visit this place.
How to get there?
If you are coming from Kottayam side you need to take a diversion from Chottupara junction before reaching Vagamon. The other way is through the Kanjar-Moolammatam route if you are coming from the Thodupuzha side of Kerala.
Kottayam station is the nearest railway station which is around 70 km from Uluppuni and cochin international airport is located around 95 km from this viewpoint. The nearest towns are Vagamon and Erattupetta which is around 10 km and 35 km respectively. Since the Vagamon is far and short availability of public transport it’s preferred to come by your own vehicle or taxi to this place.
When to visit?
Uluppuni will be more foggy and beautiful during winter and avoid travel during the rainy season. It is open and free to visit for all as of now. Better visit early morning or evening to feel the spooky vibe. Paths will be slushy when it rains and it’s very difficult for offroaders to get their vehicles at top.
Since it is very easy to climb you don’t need to carry any trekking wears.
Happy Exploring !!!
