Ramakkalmedu – The Panoramic beauty of Mother Nature

Have you ever been into a place that made you watch whole infinite land with valleys and meadows underneath? If no, Ramakkalmedu is your perfect gateway. It is a stunning hill station in Kerala state located in India. The place in Idukki district offering a breathtaking view of Tamilnadu and Kerala together. You can witness the panoramic beauty from the height of 3500ft above sea level which makes your soul shine.

           

It is believed that Lord Rama(Hindu god in epic Ramayana) stepped in this place when he was searching for his wife Sita, who was abducted by the king Ravana of Lanka. Rama-kal-medu translates to “Land of Rama’s Stone” considering the land where Rama stepped his foot. Vagamon, Theni, Cumbum, Thevaram, and more places can be visible from this hill station. Ramakkalmedu is close to one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala – Thekkady, a popular destination among tourists. If you are a photography enthusiast it never makes you upset when you reach here. You can capture stunning pictures in each and every frame.

           

 

The geographical terrain of this natural surprise in such an inhabited place which makes anyone wow. The mountains near to the site are surrounded by thick green forests that serve as a natural home to various birds and animals. Witnessing sunrise and sunset with the pleasant wind here will be one of the awesome feelings you ever experience in your lifetime.

Kuravan Kurathi Statue

The expedition remains incomplete without a walk to the Kuravan Kurathi statue located nearby. Kuravan Kurathi statue is the other attractions here which are located one of the other hills. The statue tells two historical characters behind the making of the Idukki Dam. The small mountains between the Idukki dam are named after Kuravan and Kurathi, who helped authorities to find the right place for constructing the dam. This hill offers a spectacular view of Tamilnadu. From this site, you can see the Ramakkalmedu wind energy farm. As the wind is at the constant velocity (around 35 km per hour)it is more suitable for installing the wind farm here.

Wind Farms

You need to trek around 10 mins to get there. If you are coming from the Kochi side do visit the Idukki dam if possible. It is one of the highest arch dams in Asia which is located around 40 km from here.

How to get there?

The nearest airport is at Nedumbassery which is in Kerala state and its distance around 140 km and one in Madurai which is in Tamilnadu state around 140 km from there. It takes 5 hours (150 km) to reach from Kochi(Kerala) by road and 4 hours(140kms) from Madurai(Tamilnadu). The nearest Railway station is in Kottayam which is around 150 km from there.

Vehicle parking is allowed. You need to do a moderate trek around 10 mins to reach the top from the starting point. Do carry water bottles with you. You can see small shops at the top where you can buy stuff. Take care of yourself since the place is very steep at some points. It is totally free to go to the topside without any charges. You can spend around 2-4 hours there. Do not throw plastics and wastes as the authorities are very strict about rules here. Its perfectly suit for couples. The place is crowded at weekends than on weekdays.

The best season to visit this place is during November- march. The weather will be cool and pleasant at this time. The nearest attractions nearby are Munnar, Thekkady, Vagamon, Parunthumpara which are all within 100 km diametre from here.

Hollywood actor Leanardo Decaprio is one of the tourists among thousands who attracted to this place. He once said about this place that “If there is a paradise on earth, it is here“.
